Coca Cola and Pepsi will change the recipe in California because according to new legislation they would have to put a "cancer warning" on their packaging because of the amount of 4-methylimidazole in the drinks. Though both the companies and FDA claim it is nearly impossible to drink the amount of coke to get in the danger zone.

  1. Now the news is out, Coca Cola and Pepsi are damned whatever they do. They will be sued for the possibility that a heavy drinkers cancer might be caused by the beverage (despite the amount it would require), and a warning was not on the label before now. And it will now be common "knowledge", that cola causes cancer.

  2. It's quite common that California is the first with this kind of strict legislation and I think it will be interesting to see if other states are following to lower the amount of chemicals in food

  3. The 4-MEI is (sometimes) formed via the Maillard process. The Maillard process occurs while roasting e.g. bread and it gives that nutty aroma. So, in theory, California could legislate against toasting?
Also – is it to far fetched, that a "natural" occurring element of normal cooking requires a warning label?
